About Golden Retrievers
Picture(c) 2000 Salynn
Golden retrievers originated in the 1860s in Great Britain from a foundation stock developed at the Scottish country estate of Lord Tweedmouth. To begin the breed,Lord Tweedmouth mated a yellow wavy-coated retriever-the only yellow in a litter of blacks-to a Tweed Water Spaniel (which is now extinct). The resulting litter produced four females who, with a limited number of outcrosses, produced the foundation stock from which all of today's Golden Retrievers descend.
Goldens were first brought to North America in the late 1890s and were first registered by the American Kennel Club(AKC), in 1925.
To learn more about Golden Retrievers, including diseases and hereditary traits they may be prone to, I would suggest going to your local library, or looking up onlinePet educational sites such as:

http://www.grca.org (Golden Retriever Club of America)
Golden retrievers are very forgiving dogs, it's too bad us humans are not more like them. They make an excellent family pet.
Golden retrievers are very affectionate animals. They require your attention any time they can get it (which is most of the time). If you do not have the time to spend with your pet, I would discourage anyone from getting one. They are very trainable, having a desire to please their master. They also love to chew on things, I recommend getting a good chew toy from a pet store, (this will save you from hunting for your favorite tools, bowls etc).
